It is a Great Feeling: Larkin and Lacey will Never Quit Giving

2007 was an awful year for Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. It is in that same year that the two journalists who also happen to be co-founders of Village Voice Media and Phoenix New Times got put behind bars by Maricopa County. In recent months, the duo who are also good at their journalism profession brought to light the bad and worst of Maricopa County Sherriff, Joe Arpaio.

Apparently, the two alleged that Joe Arpaio was a man who used his place of authority to undermine the rights of immigrants living in the region and provided some evidence to back up the damaging allegations.

Joe Arpaio, the then Maricopa County Sherriff, did not take the allegations lightly. On one night, the two journalists got whisked off from their motel complex and locked up in jail. When members of public got to learn of what had transpired, they rallied their support behind Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, and Joe had no other choice but to release the duo. After years of a heated court battle, Michael and Jim found their reprieve. It is in 2013 that they got awarded a $3.75 million settlement, money they have since chosen to use through philanthropy.

Today, Michael and Jim run the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, an umbrella body with the passion for financially supporting migrant rights organizations in the State of Arizona. One group that happens to benefit from the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is none other than the Raul Castro Institute.

The Raul Castro Institute is an organization created mainly to fight for the rights of the frail and elderly Latinos that commonly face harassments at the U.S. – Mexico border point.

The group happens to be the creation of Raul H. Castro, who at one point in time was a Mexican-American Governor and an ambassador to Argentina, El Salvador, and Bolivia. When Raul was ninety-six years old, he faced border patrol harassment when his pacemaker accidentally set off a security sensor. Read more: Michael Lacey | Twitter

Frail as he was, the officers at border point detained Mr. Castro and went ahead to interrogate him for long hours amidst the scorching sun. It is through his ordeal that Castro found enough reason to fight for the right of seniors, individuals that might not have the courage to speak out loud.

Apart from that, the Raul Castro Institute encourages young Latinos to attend college, so that one day they might be of benefit to society. With the support shown by the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, the Raul Castro Institute has found its success.
